The first week of training far exceeded my expectations. The language classes were comprehensive, the cultural training very informative and the sightseeing was an added bonus! Staying at the Happy Home gave all the volunteers and opportunity to get to know each other and makes you feel less like a tourist and more like a volunteer. After returning from my 2 day stay at the training village (in Dhulikhel) I chose to head straight to my placement in Devis Falls, Pokhara.

Melinda

We both really loved our time in the village, although it was hard at first to converse with the little Nepali that we knew, but the people at the village were very friendly and eager to help us. We miss all the children, friends and family, they really made our stay unforgettable.  We would like to thank INFO Nepal for the wonderful experience and for organizing the Nepali lessons and time spent at the training village prior to our placement, it really prepared us for living a village life.

My time in Nepal has been absolutely amazing. Every day has been unpredictable, new and exciting and a big adventure. I taught English at a resource centre near Pokhara. The kids were so full of energy, and so much fun to teach, I fell in inlove with every one of them! There was a river in the village where we went swimming, the kids eagerly showing us the best diving spots! We played a massive game of red rover in the village, with all of the kids; Nepali kids are so much more violent and tough than kids back home; it made for a very interesting game! It takes a while to get used to the constant staring from the Nepali locals, but they are so welcoming and warm and don’t mean anything by it, it's all just good banter! Haggling in Thamel can actually be a lot of fun; I spent a very nice 30 minutes haggling over a pashmina with a cup of tea and friendly, though false, chit-chat!  My highlight would have to be doing the bungee jump with the last resort. I still can't believe I did it, but it was so much fun, definitely worth doing! We went trekking but saw very little of the views due to the clouds. Still it was good fun being so high that we were actually walking in clouds! I'd say don’t come in monsoon season, I will definitely be back in spring one of these days to see Nepal at its best. Pokhara is my favourite place that I've been to. The views across the lake are beautiful and it's so much more peaceful than Kathmandu.

There was so many new things that I, as a westerner couldn’t even wrap my head around.  Eating on the floor with my hands, showering outside, the plus 50C heat, the mass amount of RICE I ate, and even the new toilet ritual. Being completely immersed in the Nepali culture was the most extraordinary learning experience that I have had.  Every minute there was something new to experience and a new smile looking up at me.  The children that attended the library that I worked at all snuggled deep in my heart.
